Charlotte Evaluation Question 2 - How effective is the combonation of your main product and ancillary product?

Made with Padlet

Charlotte Evaluation Question 1- In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Neamh Evaluation question 4- How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Neamh Evaluation question 3- What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

Introduction
Our music video has been created for the song 'Satisfied' by Balcony. Our target audience was females aged 16-25 who would enjoy listening to indie-pop music. They would also be able to relate to the lyrics in the song. Having a target audience is very important as it allows the producer to market specifically to one audience and cater for their needs. For example, if they were targeting young females who listen to pop music, themes that will be seen in the video are most likely to include creative costumes and makeup, bright colours and an overall fun feel, wheres if they were targeting a middle aged, male audience, who enjoy rock and roll, it may be more suitable to have a performance music video with older actors present.

Research
After showing an audience our first draft of our music video, we were able to get feedback as to what went well and any areas for improvement through asking the audience a series of questions based on what they thought about our M-E-S, Cinematography locations, codes and conventions. The audience had an array of suggestions such as using more creative locations, props and shot types which we implemented into our updated version. This was seen through the variety of locations we filmed in. We also implemented several shot types such as focus pulls, long shots, extreme close ups, panning and different angles. We also filmed two disscussions as a group, talking about the magazine advert and the design for the DVD Digipack. This allowed us to effectively discuss as a group what concepts and ideas worked and what didn't.

Planning
Class sketches allowed us to develop on our ideas by drawing them into something that would look like the final product. In this example, this aided us to get the final look that we wanted to achieve rather than the bottom picture which was an initial decision.

We created something called a 'Wordle' which enables you to put together a scramble of words in order to represent them in a certain way. The words that we used to create this were the lyrics from the song we have chosen. This helped us to look at the lyrics from a different perspective and pick out which words really stood out.

Interviewing audience members allowed us to get a first hand look as to what our target audience had to say and if we could gather any helpful advice from their feedback. We filmed this video before starting on any of our projects and this gave us an insight into what our audience would expect to see from this genre, locations that we should use and what concepts should be portrayed.

We conducted a survey on our target audience, the results below show the number of audience members that said what the lead actors gender should be. This shows that the vast majority said that the main actor should be female, we listened to this and decided to implement this into our video.

Similarly, in another question we asked the audience what kind of costumes they would expect her to be wearing. Majority of respondents said that she would be wearing plain clothing, this is also something that we incorporated as it fits into the genre and is what the audience would expect to see.

This question asked audiences what sorts of locations the video should be filmed in, they responded with, fields and empty areas the most, followed by Inside houses and buildings and busy cities/towns. Therefore, we incorporated these three top choices into our music video.

Interim Evaluations
Our magazine advert was posted on Instagram and the feedback that it received was in the form of comments on the picture. The feedback that we generally received was that there was too much white space on the advert and this can be really unprofessional and look quite dull. As this was only a design we are hoping that the colour of the background will take away from this and as one of the audience member said, we would also benefit from moving the release date so that there is less empty space.

The music video feedback we received was on a mixture of platforms, in this example it was on iMessage. This meant that I could send the receiver a link to the video and they could watch the full version straight away. I asked them how they thought the artist was represented and it was very reassuring to hear the outcome as this is how we felt we represented the artist.

Our DVD Digipack feedback was given on WhatsApp. On here i asked audiences what they thought the overall concept was.

The peer evaluations were so detailed that they broke down all aspects of the video, letting us know what went well and what areas we needed to improve on.

On the back of the feedback sheets, audiences wrote some areas for improvement, on this one the respondent said to have the artist make more of a reaction to what she is singing as she is remaining quite still and to really highlight this by showing more footage of her singing.

Summary
I feel as if our audience has been vital to the success of our media products. They are able to pick up on details that we may have missed and give us ideas that we wouldn't have thought of. Overall it was an extremely useful aid to have.

Final Feedback
We created a Facebook page specifically for our music video, this meant that we were able to upload photos and videos easily, separating them into folders and we could then invite all of our friends and family to like the page. This in turn means that they are likely to view the page when they visit it and by liking it they will receive updates whenever we posted. We posted a series of questions and users were able to leave feedback in the comment section.

Target Audience Feedback Magazine Ad

By receiving feedback from members of our target audience, we were able to see what elements of our target audience think are the most and least creative about our magazine ad. From this, we are now able to make improvements to the magazine ad to improve it, as well as meeting the audiences expectations.

It is important for us to consider our target audiences feedback as it is them that we are trying to sell our artist to. With this, we are able to consider how we can improve our magazine in order to promote this to our target audience.

Rough-cut Peer Feedback

Our audience's feedback has been beneficial when seeing what elements of our target audience most like about our rough cut. It has allowed us to see whether the codes and conventions we have included meet the audiences expectations. We have also been able to see which elements of the product that the target audience likes and what we should keep and remove from the product.

Work in Progress

This is our the inside right for our album cover. We have chosen to take this side of our album cover for 'thank you's' for the people involved with the creation of the album. Here we have chosen to use this image as we are trying to sell the artist to the audience.

Work in progress

We have started to create our digipack and magazine ad and learning new techniques in order to produce an effective piece.

Target Audience feedback

For our social media feedback, I asked members of our target audience to answer these questions:

1) What do you think of our music video?
2) What editing do you think if the most effective to our target audience?
3) As a member of our target audience do you think that our digipack and magazine ad meet the codes and conventions that you would expect from a album in the indie-pop genre.

From this feedback from our target audience, we have been able to see which elements of our video, digipack and magazine ad they like. This has also allowed us to see which elements that they think that need improving in order to meet their expectations.

Digipack feedback

After reading this feedback about the Digipack, it is reassuring to hear that the target audience has understood the overall concept of the CD cover and what it is that we are trying to get across to the audience.

Mag Ad feedback

After reading this feedback, we need to consider making sure that the image is completely clear. This means that as soon as the audience sees it, they are aware of what the image is. There was a lot of comments about the amount of white space, i think this is something that can also be changed. For instance, we can think about the colour scheme so that any places which are empty are filled with the coloured background.

Magazine Ad

This is our plan for our magazine advert. We have chosen this as it can be related back to the album cover that we designed, creating the relationship between the magazine advert and the album. By doing this, we are also making the album more recognisable to the audience, promoting the album to a wider range of audiences.

This is my original idea for a digipack. I have considered what I have seen from other artists and bands in the indie-pop genre and I have considered what codes and conventions makes them stand out to the target audience. I have decided to use half of the artists face on the front of the magazine ad. Multiple magazine adverts that I have looked at have this aspect. I have also decided to put the name of the album in the centre of the ad, as well as making it stand out to the audience. This is typical convention of indie-pop magazine ads and this would also make it stand out. The use of pastel colours to fill the base of the magazine ad may also meet the audiences expectations of what should be included in promoting an album.

Work in progess

We have completed stages up to completing our design for our digi-pack. This has allowed us to have a better idea of how we are going to promote our music genre and song to our target audience. As well as this, audience feedback has allowed us to improve our music video in order to be able to effectively meet audiences expectations of a music video in our indie-pop genre.

Brand identidy - digipack

Front cover

For our front cover of our album, we have decided to use an extreme close up with the name of the album: 'LoveScars'. We decided to put the name of the album on the lips, allowing it to stand out and make a statement to our audience about what is involved. We have also decided on having the artists name on the front cover. This is a general convention that comes across in the majority of albums.

Spine of album

For the spine of the album, we have chosen to have the name of the artist and band. We have chosen to incorporate the pastel colours that someone may expect to see on the cover/spine of an album cover. This also makes the CD cover stand out.

Inner left and inner right covers
For the inner left cover of our album, we have decided to put the 'thank you' message from the artist. Here, we are planning on using a hand written style note, as it gives off a more of a personal feel to the album. As well as this, we have chosen to reference the song: 'Satisfied', into the inside cover. For this, we have chosen to use flowers in order to refer back to the song and the fact that we used flowers in the music video:

Back cover

For the back cover, we have decided to use the same image as on the magazine advert, of a back with a heart shape made out of scars. This relates to the album title 'LoveScars' and pulls the whole piece together, as well as linking back to the song.

Magazine Advert

This is our final plan for our magazine advert. We have decided to use the name of the album across the centre of the magazine ad, targeting the audience and making the album stand out. As well as this, we decided to use the same image that we will use on the back of the album cover in order to connect the two elements of the digi-pack. The artists name has been placed over the top of the album cover, creating it to stand out and make the audience interested. The record label and release date has also been put in the magazine ad in order to increase promotion.
We have chosen to use pastel colours which is a code and convention of the indie-pop genre. This is beneficial as it highlights to the audience the genre of the music video.

Magazine Ad Design

Here, we have considered different ideas for what our magazine advert could be for our Digipack, in order to find how to most promote the album cover.

Magazine advert discussion

In this video we discussed our initial designs for the magazine advert. We have decided to go with Neamh's design of the image showing the artists back with scars on it. This photo is the same as the photo which is on the back of our digipack. This is a convention that many artist use and it will create a sense of familiararity for our audience.  The font and colours we have decided to use are very bright and colourful which will draw in the audience as their eyes will be initially drawn to the magazine advert. The audience still get a sense of the overall concept of the song through the name of the album and the photo on the magazine advert. The name is 'Love scars' and this is clearly shown through the scars in the shape of a love heart on the back of the artist.

Font Analysis

On this Prezi, we have considered what fonts most fit with the indie-pop genre. This has then allowed us to effectively compare which fonts would most suit our Digipack album cover, as well as most fitting with the genre of the music video.
